How Much Stone Veneer Do You Need? Measure Your Wall in 4 Steps

A simple way to measure walls, fireplaces and columns for stone veneer, subtract openings and add waste before you order.

Ordering the right amount of stone saves you money and a second trip. Too little and the job stops halfway; too much and you pay for pallets you do not use. The good news: you only need a tape measure, a notepad and about ten minutes.

Step 1: Measure every wall you want to cover

Measure the width and the height of each surface in feet, then multiply them.

  • A wall 12 ft wide and 8 ft high = 96 sq ft
  • A fireplace 6 ft wide and 9 ft high = 54 sq ft
  • A column has four sides: measure each side and add them up

Write each surface on its own line. It makes the next steps easier and helps us if you send us your notes.

Step 2: Subtract doors and windows

Stone does not go over openings, so take them out:

Opening Size Area
Window 3 ft × 5 ft 15 sq ft
Front door 3 ft × 7 ft 21 sq ft
Fireplace opening 3 ft × 2.5 ft 7.5 sq ft

Example: a 12 × 8 ft wall with one 3 × 5 ft window needs 96 − 15 = 81 sq ft of stone.

Small openings like outlets or vents are not worth subtracting.

Step 3: Note corners, caps and edges

If your project has outside corners, columns, a ledge on top of a short wall or a window sill, measure the length of those edges in feet and write it down. These spots use finishing pieces such as wall caps, header pieces and sills. Tell us the numbers and we will help you choose the right pieces for your stone.

Step 4: Add 10% for cuts and waste

Stone gets cut to fit around edges and openings, and a few pieces always end up too small to use. Add 10% to your total:

81 sq ft × 1.10 = about 90 sq ft

For walls with many windows, angles or a complicated shape, add a little more.

From square feet to pallets

Two tips before you order

Order everything for one wall at once. Stone is a natural-looking product and colors can shift a little between production runs. Ordering together keeps the whole wall consistent.

Plan for the weight. Our stone weighs about 7 lb per square foot, so 100 sq ft is roughly 700 lb. Good to know when you plan pickup, delivery and where the pallets will sit on site.

Not sure about your numbers?

Send us a photo of the wall with your measurements on WhatsApp or through the free quote form. We double-check the math and, if you want, quote the installation too.
